Reef restoration Dayan island

Revitalisation of a coral reef

Dayan is a small island off the north coast of Batanta, one of the “Four Kings” from which Raja Ampat derives its name. The island is inhabited by only a handful of families. Diving liveaboards stop at Dayan almost daily because of its manta point, and dugongs are occasionally spotted.

The western tip of the island is home to Konstantinus Saleo and his family, who also run a small homestay for visitors. Most of the coral reef that once protected the western shore of the island has perished. Unrestricted surf now erodes the shoreline, which was previously lined with mangroves. Konstantinus aims to restore the reef and stabilise the shoreline by nursing corals and planting new mangroves. A revitalised reef would also help protect his family’s home.

If you donate..

Reef Guardian e. V. has been supporting Konstantinus since 2023. With donated funds, he has already been able to purchase equipment to grow small coral fragments on iron scaffolds. A donation of 100 euros is sufficient to finance the equipment for one additional scaffold on which corals can be cultivated. We regularly receive photos from Konstantinus to track his progress and follow the reef restoration process. The same amount also allows the planting of another row of young mangroves.
